When the Sky Said Boom – A Story to Help Children Understand Loud Sounds and Feel Safe, Calm and Reassured

March 10, 20262 min read

Many children feel worried when they hear unexpected loud sounds. Parents often look for ways to explain these moments calmly and help their children feel safe. This gentle story shared by an Emirati mother offers a reassuring way to help children understand loud noises and feel protected.

At Discovery Nursery, we believe that stories are a powerful way to help children understand the world around them, express their feelings, and feel safe and reassured.

Today we are grateful to share a special story written by one of our nursery parents, Salha Alhalyan. As an Emirati mother, she created this story from the heart to gently help children understand the loud sounds they may sometimes hear in the sky, in a calm and comforting way.

Through the story of twins Omar and Laila, the message reminds children that it is natural to feel curious or worried, and that there are always people working to keep our skies and our country safe.

We thank Salha for sharing this thoughtful and reassuring story with our community and for allowing us to share it with all our Discovery families.

Helping Children Feel Calm When They Hear Loud Sounds

Parents can support children by:

  • Staying calm and reassuring them

  • Explaining what the sound may be in simple words

  • Moving away from windows if needed

  • Encouraging children to talk about how they feel

Children often feel safer when adults respond calmly and confidently. Talking openly helps them understand unfamiliar situations and reduces fear.

We hope you and your children enjoyed this thoughtful and comforting story.

Stories like these can be a powerful way to help children process emotions, ask questions, and feel reassured. Speaking calmly with children and helping them understand unfamiliar situations plays an important role in nurturing their sense of safety and emotional wellbeing.

Our heartfelt thanks again to Salha Alhalyan for generously sharing this beautiful story with the Discovery Nursery community. It is a meaningful gift for children and families.

If you found this story helpful, we warmly encourage you to share it with other children, parents, and families who may also benefit from its reassuring message.
